10 Last Words of a Dying Church ...

Brian Dodd writes a great article on the "dying church."

“If you don’t like change, you‘re going to like irrelevance even less.” Those are the words of General Eric Shinseki, Chief of Staff, U.S. Army.

There are few things as sad as watching a once great church grow old, become irrelevant, and slowly die. What is worse is that they either don’t know they’re dying or they simply don’t care as long as those remaining are happy. Sadly, I have witnessed this more times than I wish to count. In addition, I have attended this type of church before.

Here is what I have noticed about many of these churches - at a pivotal point, a decision was made to continue doing ministry the way they always have rather than alter their approach to reach a changing community or the next generation. After months of committee meetings and off-line conversations, the church finally utters the The 10 Last Words Of Dying Churches – “We’ve never done it that way before. We’re not changing.”

Visiting FBC Kerens, TX ...

Last year, FBC Kerens, TX suffered a devastating fire but that didn't stop them from what God had in store for them. You can see here the new building going up. The pastor, Bro. Wes, has continued to focus on reaching his community for Jesus Christ. They have borrowed Cornerstone's portable baptistry a number of times but they can't wait to get into their new building.

I will be visiting their Bible study and worship service tomorrow morning. Just a few miles east of Corsicana, I am looking forward to worshiping with that fellowship.

Linda Takes a Fall ...

We were just starting a good day here in Corsicana, finishing cleaning out my office and ready to run errands then off to Dallas for the day.

Linda stepped off a curb wrong, rolled her ankle and and went down. Huge raspberry on her knee and shin, but the real damage was to the ankle. She had broken it a couple of years ago (hair-line fracture) and the same swelling in the same place immediately came up.

I doctored her and got her to Dallas. She called the doctor and she has an appointment with him Monday for an x-ray. We are grateful that it wasn't worse. I have already been accused of pushing her down but I flatly deny that! When she tripped on the stairs a few years ago, I was still in bed (promise!) ...

Thank you, Lord, that it wasn't worse.

Just Finished This Book ...

What a great read!

This book details the day that President Ronald Reagan was shot outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. Not only a minute by minute account, but Del Quentin Wilber sets the narrative in context with what was going on in America and around the world.

I didn't want to put it down ... even though I knew the outcome, the prose drew me deeper and deeper into that fateful day and I (once again) experienced this earth-shattering event.

This is just the book as you weather through these hot summer months.

Nancy Leigh DeMoss: Why were you created?

“To try and make the world a better place.”
“I was born to shop!”
“I think I really want to serve others in my life.”

Nancy: Do you ever wonder what your purpose is on this earth? I’ll tell you. We were made to bring God pleasure. That’s why we praise Him: because we were created to do it.

There’s another reason we should praise God. Praise is the number-one occupation in heaven. The apostle John sees a vision of heaven in Revelation 4 and 5. He sees more than 100 million angels who have one full-time responsibility: to worship the One who sits on the throne and the Lamb at His right hand.

When we praise the Lord, it’s like a dress rehearsal for what we’ll spend an eternity doing in heaven.

How much “practice” are you getting for that eternal concert? Are you doing what you were created to do? Are you praising God?

Steve Hardin is the campus pastor for the Northway Village Church. He used to be on staff (a number of years ago) at FBC Dallas and he lit up the place with his contemporary worship services.

I appreciate Matt Chandler, founder of Village Church and pastor at the Flower Mound campus ... he is solid in the Word of God and his messages (transcript and podcast) really feed my soul. A pastor needs that when he himself is giving 2-3 times a week.

Check out the links I have provided and there are plenty more links when you land on the web site. We might even try out a Saturday night service. What do you think?
